If you’ve got a short question (preferably hockey-based) that you think I could answer or give my opinion on without having to write a 2500 word deep-dive about it, this is the place for it.
You’ve written that “despite adequate relative numbers (Tyler Myers) isolated impact on defence was very bad”. You’ve also said that this appears to be standard for him. How can someone be consistently bad in isolated impact but also consistently ok in relative numbers?
Because relative numbers tend to be rates (CF%, GF%, xGF%) and not specifically defence. On a bad defence like the Canucks' he might have good relative overall numbers but his defensive numbers might be (and are) poor.
Bergeron yes, for sure. Both Tavares and Barkov are all-offence-no-defence in terms of their scoring chance/goal impacts but you could make the case for Barkov especially.
Tough to say. He had crazy inflated WAR because his on-ice shooting was very high, but his offence in terms of scoring-chance-driving has never been strong. And of course his line got smoked in the playoffs. I think he's a good defensive centre but he's not the difference maker offensively that he might have seemed like.
Both guys saw a similar collapse in on-ice shooting this year that drove their WAR and point totals down. I like Gourde's defensive impact better but I could be swayed either way.
By the only stats we have that measure "coaching impact" (Micah McCurdy's coaching isolates) Laviolette's system has had a depressive effect on his team's offence throughout his career including with the Canes and Flyers. Plus the JR connection worries me in terms of unconditional loyalty.
Not sure, his underlying numbers aren't great but obviously there are valid issues around deployment. I said on Steve Laidlaw's podcast that I thought Florida would be a good fit if the Oilers finally have to give up and trade him.
Yeah, I've taken a bit of a writing break because I got kinda burnt out but I'll get to every team eventually. They're in a tough spot because their biggest theoretical need is goaltending, which is the hardest and stupidest thing to "address". Think they should really try to clear some space from their blueline tbh
I'd hope for their sake they'd look for a guy who isn't Zaitsev to play with Chabot. Ironically DeMelo would be a good target for them. In net I always wonder if they'd be a team looking at Matt Murray.
With the Caps moving on from Reirden this morning, who could be a potential replacement option for that team moving forward to help get the most of that roster?
How bad is Sean Monahan?
He was real bad this year. He's terrible defensively and his GF and xGF impact have plummeted in the past two seasons.
That line has almost always been all Gaudreau IMO (and just by looking at Wowy stats), Gaudreau had a bad year but Monahan just isn't a good player.
Really hoping they trade him this offseason.
A bit late to the party, but what did you think of the Donato / Dubnyk trade to San Jose?
Which older players have significantly regressed? Which ones are still top players in the league?
Is Chara still a good defenceman?
will you make a top 20 of each position list?
Maybe in the offseason
Who should be the priority FA targets this offeaason for the astute GM?
Smart teams would be scouring the "analytical darling" near-league-min guys and getting their scouts to look hard into their game tape
Best goalie in the league?
no such thing
Best defenceman in the league?
Is Pettersson a top 5 centre? McDavid, Crosby, MacKinnon seem to be the clear top 3. Could Petey make an argument for being 4/5? Who else is up there?
I think he is, yes.
How were you so blessed to share a name with god himself Jack Johnson
I also share a first name with John Marino so I'm doubly blessed

Is Micah McCurdy’s coaching isolates free? Can’t seem to find them
For subscribers they're at hockeyviz.com/coaches
Who are the top 3 coaches in the league?
How good is Mat Barzal? Where would you rank him approximately among centres
He's a microstat hero whose impact has been majorly blunted by Trotz's system. Hard to really rank him considering that.
Did Bergeron Barkov and Tavares really regress that much this year? Would you still consider them top 15 centres?
Bergeron yes, for sure. Both Tavares and Barkov are all-offence-no-defence in terms of their scoring chance/goal impacts but you could make the case for Barkov especially.
How does Troy Terry look?
So far so good, especially defensively.
Opinions on Travis Dermott??
Excellent defensive defenceman with not much offence. Last guy the Leafs should think about moving.
Who is tour favourite "pure" 3rd liner?
Depends what counts as a "pure third liner." 3rd line results + 3rd line minutes?
How did McCann fare as the Pens 3rd line center this year?
Tough to say. He had crazy inflated WAR because his on-ice shooting was very high, but his offence in terms of scoring-chance-driving has never been strong. And of course his line got smoked in the playoffs. I think he's a good defensive centre but he's not the difference maker offensively that he might have seemed like.
Of the top cap-hit defensemen, who would you consider good value? Are any of them north of 28-years-old?
Carlson, Hedman, Spurgeon, and Letang stand out.
Who has the biggest impact, Gourde or Niederreiter?
Both guys saw a similar collapse in on-ice shooting this year that drove their WAR and point totals down. I like Gourde's defensive impact better but I could be swayed either way.
Who is the best dman between Weegar. Demelo and Grzelcyk?
Weegar has played like a legit top-pairing defensive stud for the Panthers. I see DeMelo and Grzelcyk as being strong top four guys probably.
Why don't you think the Pens should hire Laviolette?
By the only stats we have that measure "coaching impact" (Micah McCurdy's coaching isolates) Laviolette's system has had a depressive effect on his team's offence throughout his career including with the Canes and Flyers. Plus the JR connection worries me in terms of unconditional loyalty.
are you a Puljujarvi believer?
Not sure, his underlying numbers aren't great but obviously there are valid issues around deployment. I said on Steve Laidlaw's podcast that I thought Florida would be a good fit if the Oilers finally have to give up and trade him.
Who’s your pick for the cup?
I have the Avs on my bracket
Will you write a post mortem for the canes? What should their focus be this offseason?
Yeah, I've taken a bit of a writing break because I got kinda burnt out but I'll get to every team eventually. They're in a tough spot because their biggest theoretical need is goaltending, which is the hardest and stupidest thing to "address". Think they should really try to clear some space from their blueline tbh
How do you think Cody Glass, Nic Hague, and Peyton Krebs project for Vegas in the coming seasons?
Not sure, not really a prospects guy to be honest.
rank ur top 10 forwards in the nhl
If I ever do this it'll be in an article/podcast setting where I can show my work haha
Who do the sens target this offseason? They need to find their guy in net at some point.
I'd hope for their sake they'd look for a guy who isn't Zaitsev to play with Chabot. Ironically DeMelo would be a good target for them. In net I always wonder if they'd be a team looking at Matt Murray.
With the Caps moving on from Reirden this morning, who could be a potential replacement option for that team moving forward to help get the most of that roster?
it'd be funny if they picked Bruce Boudreau, who's probably the best available. But I guess Gallant would make sense for them.
Who will get the most penalty mins in the second round
Who are some of the best defensemen in the NHL and what makes them so good?
Josi (transition play), Spurgeon (skating), Hamilton (willingness to shoot like crazy) are some good examples
What is a fair 1 for 1 trade involving William Nylander and a defenceman of similar age?
Rasmus Andersson
what do you think adam boqvist/kirby dachs potential is?
I can't really speak to prospects but I can say that Adam Boqvist's offensive numbers were very strong this season
