Me: "hmmm, with a flat cap, maybe NHL GMs will be pragmatic and rational-"

*Montreal gives a $5.5 million/year deal to Josh Anderson*

"-okay so that's just Bergevin, perhaps it'll get more reasonable with a more competent GM-"

*Columbus trades a decent top pairing defenseman for a 5th round pick*

"-alright so maybe sometimes things go wrong-"

*Ottawa acquires Erik Gudbranson*

"You know what forget it, every NHL GM is a dumbass, let the UFA season begin!"

As a Habs fan, the Josh Anderson contract hurts me to my core. Lol, after sleeping on it, I just say fuck it and embrace the madness.

Bergevin made a fine trade to get Allen, but his signings are a problem. Edmundson and Anderson are gonna cost a combined $9 million against the cap per season.

I feel like if he really wants to go wild this off-season, he should deliver the grand-daddy of middle fingers by offer-sheeting Sergachev.

I completely concur. The AAVs for both Anderson and Edmundson are at least 1M$ too much. Feels to me like he just gave them an offer with no bargaining at all. At the very least, it should have been 0.5M$ less each. And even then, there were better players available. To think that I expected us to save money with Josh Anderson instead of Max Domi...ooh

Let's forget Sergachev, the Habs have 5 LHD already, and many more in the pipeline, plus they have no cap space to speak of. At least not for an top pairing D salary.

I'm not impressed with Bergevin's negotiating skills these days, he used to be known for better deals than this. He had an amazing 2 years were he could do no wrong, feels like he's now back to the old, bad Bergy of circa 2017.

Right now, the only move I can see is to find a LW on the market like Haula or Granlund maybe. But even then you'd probably need to shed some salary by trading away a Paul Byron for instance. Mantha's taking a long time signing with Detroit, maybe he can be had in a trade for a 1st and prospects, but that's unlikely. Taylor Hall is a pipe dream and even if he did come would crush the habs' cap structure.

I don't have great confidence in Bergevin's ability to make a value trade, after what he's shown the past few days. He used to be great at this, but these last few moves have been dubious. Not terrible, but dubious.

Yeah, Montreal has been in this weird state of "rebuild but also win now" mode and Bergevin has been rudderless on this stuff. On one hand he can just pull off genius moves (Galchenyuk for Domi, getting Petry, getting Danault, the pacioretty for Suzuki + Tatar trade) but on the other hand he is incredibly aimless and seems too random.

I'm a Leafs fan so we've got our own weird problems, but I generally like the Canadiens (friendly ribbing aside) and Bergevin has been frustrating.

Hey J, do you think Mikael Granlund to Habs is a good idea?
